To Work and To Love
Freud thought that human beings have two great needs, to work and to love. Is work then something we do to earn a living, or is it something more? How might our work contribute to what theologian Matthew Fox calls "The Great Work of the Universe"?

For the Bible Tells UUs So
It's a common question among Unity parents: "What about the Bible?" Do the stories of the Old and New Testaments have a place in the religious upbringing of our children? Why does the Bible elicit a wholly different response from Unitarian Universalist adults than other sacred texts? Drawing wisdom from our liberal religious ancestors, William Ellery Channing and Sophia Lyon Fahs, worship leader and Director of Religious Education Kerri Meyer will frame a possible approach to the Judeo-Christian scriptures, useful to parents and Sunday School teachers and of interest -- Kerri hopes -- to all.
Kerri Meyer Unity Church-Unitarian, St. Paul, MN 08/24/2008
Do You Believe in Atheists?
A lot has happened in the years between the headline that proclaimed "God Is Dead" and the headline I saw recently that read "The Year of the Atheist." Join me this Sunday as I explore what it means to be "a New Atheist" and whether or not it’s really that new or for that matter that it has any significance at all.

Ceremonial Violence
Beginning in 1997, a wave of school shootings rocked the nation, terrifying students and convincing parents that school was no longer a safe place for their children. Jonathan Fast will speak about Ceremonial Violence, a book he authored, to be published in the Fall, and explain what brought the children, some of whom were intelligent and well-to-do, from communities not unlike Westport, to commit such desperate acts. Jonathan is a former member, professor, author, and husband of Rev. Barbara Fast.

It Was So, It Was Not So
The religious traditions of the world are filled with all sorts of wonderful stories. You might ask, "If they're just stories, are they really worth the the time and attention people pay them?" But, is a story ever just a story?

Lessons From Katrina
This week it will be three years since the natural, and political, disaster that was Katrina. We will reflect on the lessons we have learned and those we still need to learn with people who have been in the Gulf Coast helping make things better.

Politics and Social Action At Eliot Chapel
Some people say politics ought to be kept out of church; others say that social action is inherently political and that we must choose. Unitarians tend to trust democratic decision-making in ordinary church work, but not so much when it comes to politics because we want to encourage diversity. How to unstick this wicket?.

Sophie's Insight: Playing With the Moment
At age 6, Sophie discovered that time moves effortlessly from "now" to memory. Itâs a wonderful insight, but how important is "now?" What does it mean to be in the moment? Why do we live our lives in "future mode" while clinging to the past for guidance? If we are open, we can discover the "now" that calls us to play and to "dance in a spring wind." Then we can realize that "Only this moment is life."

Five Smooth Stones
If Unitarian Universalists don't have a single creed, a single scripture, or a SINGULAR prophet, what do we have? Five smooth stones. It is a concept from James Luther Adams, for whom our Adams Hall is named.

In the Spirit of Good Conversation
Henry David Thoreau wrote: "I had three chairs in my house; one for solitude, two for friendship, three for society." He understood conversation about important life matters -as did his Transcendentalist contemporaries- to be a part of their spiritual discipline. How might we create the opportunity for such conversations?

The Encounter of Commitments
Harvard professor, Diana Eck, tells us that the "new pluralism" does not require us to leave our identities and commitments behind because pluralism is "the encounter of commitments." Denny Davidoff embraces Eck's definition in the Interfaith Alliance's LEADD summer program for high school students. How is it working? Denny has long been a leader in UU affairs, and is a founder of the Interfaith Alliance.

Hard Hats and Life Preservers
Should the church be a place where people’s lives can change for the better in some fundamental way? Poet Anne Dillard said people should be given hard hats and life preservers when they come to church. What does she mean by this? What is the meaning of membership at ERUUF? Our mission is to transform lives by building a free and inclusive covenantal religious community of spirit, service, justice and love. Are you ready?

Toward a Culture of Peace
Jim presents songs and reflections on peace and non-violence as a spiritual value. Jim suggests that UUs could adopt an "Eighth Principle" of the non-violent resolution of conflict. Jim Scott is widely known to UUs for his anthem "Gather the Spirit." He played for years with the Paul Winter Consort and has made a number of recordings of his own music. He has a long UU history, having visited more than 500 UU churches, and has several songs in both Singing the Living Tradition and the new Singing the Journey hymnbooks. He was co-chair of the UU Ministry for the Earth and helped create the Green Sanctuary Program. With a grant from the Fund for UUism he arrange and edited the "Earth and Spirit Songbook," an anthology of 110 songs of earth and peace, and a great resource for our workshop and RE.

A Traveler’s Field Guide to Unitarians and Universalists
To some people, Unitarians and Universalists are a bit like Confusing Fall Warblers - hard to tell them apart and do I really care. This handy field guide will ease proper identification and give insight into both the past and the future, which may make the present a little less confusing.
