| Eating Our Values |
Jen Crow | First Unitarian Church of Rochester NY | 07/27/2008 |
| Learning to Surf Mindfulness meditation encourages us to recognize the inevitability of pain and struggle in daily life - the embracing of this reality allows us to let go and find peace. This is the essence of what the Buddhist nun Pema Chodron calls "letting go of the story line." She writes, "real life problems are the material for waking up, not the reason to stop trying" - holding our struggles with the same honor that we hold our joy is the essence of waking up to life. But how do we learn to just "be" while still needing to do the "do"? Jenny explores the challenges in reaching this state of awareness, the journey to find peace there, and the role of faith and religion in this process. |

| Now Is the Accepted Time Eighteen months ago, our church was asked by UUA President Bill Sinkford to be one of three UU Congregations in the U.S. to participate in the Diversity of Ministry Initiative. His invitation was an honor and sign of confidence by the UUA in UUCA; it is also an opportunity to deepen our spirituality and ministry. Join me this morning as I take a close look at DOMI. |

| The Blessings of Imperfection In the 1800s, most Unitarians believed the perfectibility of human nature, salvation by character, and the progress of humankind “onward and upward forever.” Today, some of us (like me) think we should be perfect-even though we know perfection is impossible. But perhaps perfectionism, not imperfection, is our “original sin” and the true blessings of life are found in imperfection. |

| To Infinity and Beyond Our liberal religious tradition values the role of rational inquiry more than other traditions. But careful, rational inspection of the best of our information and deepest of our intuitions can lead us into strange places. What happens when familiar truths are shown to have disconcerting implications? Some examples from the history of mathematics can be both cautionary and enlightening. |
Craig Allen | Unity Church-Unitarian, St. Paul, MN | 07/20/2008 |
| Closing Doors Who among us has never held on too long, refused to close a door or to make a decision even when moving forward and making a choice will be freeing, liberating, expansive and life-changing in positive ways? Treatment options, vacation options, which movie to see or what to wear today... and on it goes ... deep into the spiritual realms |
Stephen P. Herman, M.D. | The Unitarian Church in Westport | 07/20/2008 |
| Heard it in a Love Song Regardless of our age, most of us can recall one or more love song the strains of which can be evoked, unbidden. These songs can conjure up memories of times and places we treasure in memory, or long to forget. Have images of love and relationship as portrayed in these songs shaped our understanding of the nature of human connection? What do they tell us about the meaning of life and love? |

| Making the Effort Unity Church encourages us to create lives of integrity, service and joy. How do we engage in this effort within our own lives, with each other, and beyond the walls of Unity Church? What holds us back and what drives us forward? Laura Smidzik takes a thoughtful look at the journey our faith calls us to take |
Laura Smidzik | Unity Church-Unitarian, St. Paul, MN | 07/13/2008 |
| On Hiding . . . . from evil . . . . from good . . . . from ourselves Anne Frank and her family went into hiding from the Nazis in Amsterdam. Her diary from that experience has become world famous and timeless. When should we hide? When should we emerge from the protection of our own "attic"? When should we confront our own demons - within and without? (Dr. Herman, a new member of our congregation, is a child and adult forensic psychiatrist.) |

| Interconnections What would the world look like if we could see interconnections rather than objects? Is this church made of 161 individuals, or a much larger number of interconnections? Is a forest made of trees, or uncountable interconnections between and within things? And what is a "thing", according to Shakespeare? How would the world be if we could see the interconnections between people and hear the unspoken words? |

| Out-Uplifting At the center of German philosopher Hegelâs construction of logic is the concept of Aufhebung, a word which carries three meanings: to lift up, to preserve and to destroy. This is a look into the spiritual practice of dialectics, or accepting seemingly contradictory ideas to be true, and the practical implications for those on the journey to integrity, service and joy. |
