Title Presenter Church Date presented
Soldiers, War, and Justice: A Tension Between Beliefs
One of the more painful divisions that occurred in our society during the Vietnam War was that between people who believed we should support our soldiers who were fighting the war and those who believed our soldiers should not be supported in what they viewed as an immoral cause. Today, most people who oppose the war in Iraq make the distinction that they oppose the war but support the soldiers. Yet, for those who feel deeply that our country's cause in Iraq is unjust and illegal, how can they reconcile that belief with support for the soldiers committed to fighting the war?

Good for the Soul, or Good for the King?
The old adage goes, "Confession is good for the soul". Any decent person practices this in their personal relationships. How many of us, however, find confession to "God" in public or private as cleansing? "Most merciful God, we confess that we have sinned against you … we are truly sorry and humbly repent." Are UUs too good to repent in this fashion? Is confession of this sort good for the soul, or good for the King?

A Silence That Speaks for Them
Memorial Day is particularly meaningful and poignant in a time of war. As a nation and as a congregation we have many unanswered questions about the present conflict; we have shed many tears, we have known division and confusion and pain. But we can all agree to honor the memory of the fallen.
Rev. Evan Keely UU Congregation of Somerset Hills 05/28/2006
Putting Our Faith Into Action
It is pretty easy to talk about all of the worthwhile things we would like to do to make our world a better place, but it is much more difficult to act on those ideas. What would it mean if our whole congregation focused on the ways in which we could live our beliefs as Unitarian Universalists? Becoming a social justice activist can be a satisfying pursuit, but it takes courage, dedication, and the ability to stand up to opposition. This service may afflict the comfortable. Are you up to the challenge?

Let Us Pray
Prayer can be a thorny issue. What does it mean? To what or to whom should we pray? And for what? Is it necessary to believe in some kind of deity in order to pray? What words should we pray with? Are words always necessary in prayer? We bring these and many other questions. Perhaps together we might find some answers.
Rev. Evan Keely UU Congregation of Somerset Hills 05/14/2006
Motherhood Is Not for Sissies
On Mother's Day we usually focus on the soft and gentle attributes of mothers. But that is not the whole story. Mothers also have to be pretty tough to manage all the things that they are called on to do during the course of their lives. So on this Mother's Day, we will be looking at the tough side of being a mother as well as the rewards for her many efforts. We will also be having a child dedication as a part of the service.

Creating a Safe Congregation
Many people have an expectation that their religious community will be a safe haven from such evils as child abuse or sexual harassment that too often plague the larger society. The sad truth, of course, is that we can never assume any human community is entirely free from such problems. What can we do, and what are our responsibilities to ensure that our congregation is as safe as possible?
